COLA freeze: the right move at the right time

Newton TAB, Letters to the Editor, 2-25-09

Mayor Cohen’s call for a COLA freeze for municipal workers is an important step towards stabilizing our city finances. It demonstrates a compassionate alternative to the other choice being discussed — forced layoffs. At another time, when a healthier economy could re-employ laid-off workers, we might look at it differently. But right now an unemployed worker is likely to
stay that way for the immediate future, and possibly longer. I have had my issues with our mayor, but this move demonstrates thoughtful, pragmatic leadership and I support him for it.

Alderman Ken Parker also deserves a hats-off. Starting three weeks ago, he spelled out the justification for a COLA freeze in a TAB op-ed, on NewTV, and in conversations with other elected officials and individuals around the city. I believe that his advocacy for this controversial move started important conversations and helped to soften resistance to the mayor’s announcement.

Finally, Alderman Jay Harney first suggested a freeze and union give-backs in May of 2008, weeks before the override vote. His suggestion, coming before the shrinkage of our state aid and the stumbling of our national economy, was sound but did not gain enough traction when made.

These three men deserve acknowledgment and appreciation from Newton’s citizens and employees. Although a COLA freeze now may be hard for many to embrace, I think it will ultimately be viewed as the right move at the right time.
